Responsibilities
- Own database performance end-to-end including query optimization, indexing strategy, connection management, capacity planning
- Design multi-tenant data patterns balancing performance and isolation tradeoffs
- Build caching infrastructure to keep EHR API latency out of critical user paths
- Identify and optimize hot paths across the application
- Build instrumentation to detect performance regressions
- Design rate limiting systems that respect EHR API limits while maintaining user experience
- Build infrastructure for graceful degradation under load, including queue management, circuit breakers, and load shedding
- Create dashboards and alerts for database performance, cache hits, connection pool usage, and API latency
- Identify and harden the system against failure modes like connection exhaustion and cache stampedes
Requirements
- 7+ years in software engineering, with 3+ focused on infrastructure, backend, or platform engineering
- Staff-level experience owning cross-cutting infrastructure and debugging tough production issues
- Strong backend fundamentals in Python, Go, TypeScript, or similar languages
- Deep experience with relational databases, Postgres preferred
- Ability to read code across the stack and trace performance issues
- Proven track record diagnosing and solving scaling or reliability problems
- Willingness to work hybrid, 3 days/week in San Francisco office
