Most design jobs ask you to make a product easier. n8n asks something stranger: make a tool that 1.7 million technical builders already love become usable by people who have never opened a terminal, without breaking it for the people who got you here.
That is the actual brief. Founder and CEO Jan Oberhauser has said for years that he wants n8n to be "the Excel of AI," a tool equally useful to a solo builder and a Fortune 500 automation team. Everything the design and product teams work on flows from that one sentence, and it is a genuinely hard design problem. It is also why n8n is one of the more interesting places in Europe to be a product designer or product manager right now.
What n8n actually does
n8n is a workflow automation platform. You drag nodes onto a canvas, connect them, and the workflow moves and transforms data between hundreds of apps. Since 2022 it has been rebuilt around AI: the same canvas now orchestrates AI agents, RAG pipelines and multi-agent systems.
That pivot is the whole story. In 2022, Oberhauser noticed Pinecone's funding trajectory and concluded that "sprinkling" AI features on the product would buy a 20 or 30 percent lift, not a 10x. So he chose the harder path, sat down to code, and with one back-end and one front-end engineer shipped the AI version of n8n in eight weeks (Felicis, April 2026).
The launch was, in his own word, "underwhelming." The community feared the product they loved was being replaced. It took nearly a year of messaging and iteration before they came around. Then the numbers moved: in 2025, users grew 6x and revenue grew 10x, with more than 80 percent of workflows on the platform involving AI agents.
The result in 2026 is a company that is hard to ignore. n8n raised a $180M Series C led by Accel at a $2.5B valuation in October 2025. Then in May 2026, SAP invested roughly $60M at a $5.2B valuation and agreed to embed n8n inside Joule Studio, the agent-building environment of its Business AI platform, with general availability targeted for Q3 2026 (Bloomberg, TNW). ARR crossed $100M around the same time, per Sacra. The repo sits above 200,000 GitHub stars.
What it is like to work there
n8n is remote-first across Europe, the UK and occasionally the US, with Berlin as the center of gravity. The company describes itself as 30-plus nationalities working from 18 countries, meeting at regular offsites.
Two things stand out in the culture material. The first is the community. n8n treats its forum, its creators and its 70-strong ambassador program as the growth engine, and says plainly that many of its best hires started in the community. The second is the efficiency ambition: the careers page states a goal of $1bn ARR with fewer than 500 people. Oberhauser has since reframed the headline target as a billion users rather than a billion dollars, precisely because the revenue framing sent the wrong message to non-paying builders.
Practically, the published benefits across n8n's job listings include equity, 30 days of vacation in Europe, a roughly โฌ1,000 annual learning budget, $100 a month to sponsor open-source projects, regular hackathons and an uncapped budget for AI tools. Design does not sit in a corner: n8n's Head of Design listing from May 2026 describes a team of around 14 covering design leads, individual contributors, design engineering and UX research, with the design system maintained in both Figma and Vue.
One warning worth taking at face value. n8n tells candidates to build an n8n workflow before applying. That is not a formality. Technical empathy is the stated bar for every role, design included.

The hiring process
n8n runs on Ashby. Public candidate reports on Glassdoor put the average process at about 21 days, with an interview difficulty of 2.93 out of 5 and a 57 percent positive experience rating. Candidates describe questions about the product itself, past projects, and a technical assignment done live rather than as an open-ended take-home, with prep notes shared in advance.
For design and product roles, the pattern in the Head of Design brief is a recruiter screen, a hiring manager conversation, peer interviews with design leads and design engineers, and a portfolio or strategy presentation. Expect at least one question about how you would lower n8n's learning curve for non-technical users without dumbing down the canvas. That is the company's central problem, and they will want to hear you think about it out loud.
Salaries
Two sources, and they should be read separately.
From Woody's own live listings, only one n8n role currently carries a published band: the Senior Product Manager (Enterprise), posted 1 September 2026, at $100k to $150k, tagged mid-level and fully remote. n8n's other roles on Woody, including Senior/Staff Product Designer, Senior/Staff UX Researcher and Senior Product Builder, were published without a public range, which is normal for German employers and means the number is set in the recruiter screen.
From public benchmarks, Levels.fyi reports a median total compensation at n8n of about $162,000, with reported figures ranging from roughly $80,000 for a recruiter in Germany to $229,000 for a sales role in the Netherlands, and software engineering bands of roughly โฌ147,000 to โฌ205,000. Design compensation is not separately reported yet, so treat the engineering band as the ceiling signal rather than the design number.
One Woody detail worth knowing before you apply: the remote radius is unusually wide. That Senior PM role is open across 27 countries, from Portugal to Estonia to the UK. But not every n8n role is remote. The Senior Brand Designer opening was listed as onsite in Berlin, which is a useful tell that brand work sits closer to the office than product work does.
Should you apply
If you want a design or product job where the constraint is real and the audience is enormous, this is a strong bet. The SAP deal puts n8n in front of a very different customer than the Discord-and-YouTube crowd that built it, and somebody has to design for both. That tension is the job.

FAQ
Is n8n fully remote?
Mostly. n8n is remote-first across Europe, the UK and sometimes the US, with regular offsites and Berlin as its base. Some roles are exceptions: the Senior Brand Designer opening on Woody was listed as onsite in Berlin.
What does n8n pay designers?
n8n does not publish design bands on most listings. Levels.fyi reports a median total compensation of around $162,000 across roles, with software engineering between roughly โฌ147,000 and โฌ205,000. The only n8n role on Woody with a published band is the Senior Product Manager (Enterprise) at $100k to $150k.
How long is n8n's hiring process?
Around 21 days on average, according to candidate reports on Glassdoor, with a difficulty rating of 2.93 out of 5.
Do I need to know how to code to work at n8n in design?
No, but you need technical empathy. n8n explicitly nudges applicants to build an n8n workflow before applying, and its design team includes design engineering.
Is n8n a good place for a designer in 2026?
If you like hard problems with a huge audience, yes. n8n is valued at $5.2B, is embedded in SAP's Joule Studio, and its core design challenge is broadening a developer tool to non-technical users without losing power users.
