Product Design Jobs in the United States 2026: Salaries & Companies

Last updated: September 2026

Ask anyone where the American product design jobs are and they will say San Francisco, New York, Seattle. Look at what is actually being posted, and the honest answer is: nowhere in particular.

We pulled the recent United States listings on Woody, around thirty product design, UX and brand roles posted between early August and mid September 2026. Nearly all carried the same location tag. Not "San Francisco". Not "New York". Just "United States". Remote, full time, open to anyone already authorised to work in the country.

The US is the biggest market on Woody by a distance, roughly 40 percent of recent listings. And it has quietly stopped being a city market.

Where the jobs actually are

The city is still in there, it is just hiding in the application link. Etsy's Staff Product Designer is tagged United States and remote, but the posting routes to Brooklyn. Cisco Meraki's Splunk design role routes to Austin. McKesson's routes to Irving, Texas. eBay's design systems principal is literally titled "Remote, Illinois".

So location did not stop mattering. The anchor moved from the office to the country. Employers hire nationally, then quietly attach you to a hub, a state or a timezone. M-Files wants a contract web designer anywhere in the US, but says EST or CST preferred.

Practically, that is good news if you live in Denver, Raleigh or Detroit. Premium roles are no longer fenced behind a Bay Area lease.

Who is hiring right now

The recent Woody sample splits into four groups.

Marketplaces and consumer platforms: Etsy, Thumbtack and OpenSea all posted senior or staff design roles in the last few weeks.

B2B and vertical SaaS, where most of the volume sits: Outreach, Sourcegraph, Instrumentl, WorkWave, Seeq, Panorama Education, Amplify, Jane and Facet.

AI-native companies, the fastest growing slice: Gray Swan, Runpod, Cherry, Norm Ai and Pano AI, several hiring designers to work on AI surfaces rather than simply to use AI tools.

And the incumbent tier people forget to apply to: eBay, Cisco Meraki, McKesson, Rocket Mortgage. Less glamorous, often better paid than the startup posting next to it.

What the salaries actually look like

From live Woody listings (US, August to September 2026):

  • Mid-level, 2 to 5 years: mostly $100k to $150k. WorkWave sits here. Thumbtack is an outlier at $150k to $200k for a mid-level role.
  • Senior and staff: $150k to $200k is the modal band by a wide margin. Outreach, Check, Archy, Pano AI, Cisco Meraki, McKesson, Facet, Panorama Education and Jane all land there.
  • Above $200k: Etsy, OpenSea, Gray Swan, Rocket Mortgage and Instrumentl all advertise bands starting above $200k for staff and lead roles.
  • Contract and production design: lower. A senior production design contract at Sand Cherry advertises $80k to $100k.

Public benchmarks: ZipRecruiter puts the average UX product designer at $144,360 as of May 2026, the middle of the market between $131,000 and $155,000, and the 90th percentile at $188,000. Glassdoor is lower at $135,746. The UX Design Institute puts the median UX designer at $108,000 and the median senior at $185,000.

Woody bands sit at or slightly above those numbers, which makes sense: a niche board of tech product roles is not a representative sample of every design job in America.

One reason US listings show real numbers at all: 18 states plus Washington DC now have pay transparency laws, and 11 of them, including California, Colorado, New York and Illinois, require a good faith pay range in the posting. A remote listing is generally subject to the strictest law of any state where the work could happen, so a nationwide role effectively has to publish a band. European listings on Woody rarely do.

Remote and visas, the honest version

The remote picture here is unusual. Across the recent US design sample, the overwhelming majority of roles were tagged remote. Meanwhile Robert Half found that in Q2 2026, 87 percent of all US job postings were fully on site and only 3 percent fully remote. Other trackers put fully remote postings between 3.5 and 6 percent.

Both are true. American hiring overall went back to the office. Tech product and design hiring, the slice Woody covers, did not. If you want remote work in the US, this is where it survives. Browse remote jobs and freelance and contract roles.

The visa reality is harder. Almost every US listing requires existing work authorisation, and H-1B selection sat around 35 percent for FY2026. The widely reported $100,000 H-1B fee was vacated by a federal district court in Massachusetts on 8 June 2026 and is not currently enforceable, though an appeal is pending and the administration has signalled it wants a fee of roughly $103,265 through regulation instead. A wage weighted lottery is due for FY2027. Given that instability, the O-1A, with no cap and no lottery, has become the realistic route for many senior designers, and design is a field where a public body of work helps the case.

How to break into this market

Aim senior. In the whole recent US sample, entry-level tags were essentially absent, and "Staff Product Designer" appeared more often than plain "Product Designer". US teams are buying seniority, not headcount, which tracks with the wider market: tech postings remain roughly 36 percent below their February 2020 baseline, and 142,985 tech workers were laid off in the first five months of 2026.

Follow the AI money. AI and ML postings are up 85 percent year on year while general software postings fall. Designers who can show work on model outputs, agent interfaces or AI design systems are in the one growing lane.

Stop filtering by city. If you only search San Francisco and New York, you will miss most of what is open, because most of it is tagged United States.

Go where the vertical is boring. Dental software, grant funding, field service routing, school analytics. Archy, Instrumentl, WorkWave and Panorama Education are all hiring, and the applicant pool is a fraction of the one chasing famous consumer brands.

The short version

The US is the deepest design market on Woody and the one that has changed shape most. It pays well, it publishes its numbers, it hires nationally, and it mostly wants people with five years or more behind them.

Start with live roles in product design, UX, UI, brand design and product management. New US roles land most weekdays, so the fastest way to catch one early is to set up a job alert.

FAQ

What does a product designer earn in the United States in 2026? Live Woody listings cluster at $100k to $150k for mid-level and $150k to $200k for senior and staff, with several staff roles above $200k. ZipRecruiter puts the average UX product designer at $144,360 and the 90th percentile at $188,000.

Do I need to live in San Francisco or New York? No. Almost every recent US design listing on Woody is tagged nationally rather than by city. Some are still anchored to a state or timezone, so read the posting, but a Bay Area address is no longer the price of entry.

Are US design jobs really remote? Within tech product and design, far more than the national average. Only about 3 to 6 percent of all US job postings are fully remote, yet the great majority of US design roles on Woody are.

Can I apply from abroad? Usually not without existing authorisation. H-1B selection was around 35 percent for FY2026 and the fee rules are in flux after a June 2026 court ruling. The O-1A, with no cap and no lottery, is the more practical route for experienced designers.

Why do US listings show salaries when European ones often do not? Because 18 states plus DC have pay transparency laws, and 11 require a pay range in the posting. A nationwide remote listing usually has to comply with the strictest applicable state law.
